Hickory Grove

A tree that is a part of a grove, is a tree that is both connected in community and significant individually. A tree that is part of a forest is indecipherable when viewing the whole. We are creating the Hickory Grove as part of the Roots & Wings Campaign to formalize one of the many ways someone can leave a legacy to Scattergood—planned giving. Whenever we receive a gift from a community member who has passed, it is an opportunity to reflect upon that individual, their family, and their connection to Scattergood. It is critically important that we know the hopes and desires of individuals and families who make such planned gifts. This knowledge allows us to ensure the proper fulfillment and recognition of their intended legacy. Participation in the Hickory Grove will not only benefit Scattergood in many self-evident ways, it will also benefit our donors by establishing, documenting, and honoring the intention behind each gift.

A word that often comes up when discussing Scattergood with staff, students, and alumni, is impact. The impact Scattergood has had on individuals. The impact individuals have had on Scattergood. The impact Scattergood has had in the IYM(C) community. And the myriad ways in which those who have grown at Scattergood have impacted their communities, large and small.

When considering the legacy one wants to make, it is important to consider the impact. Scattergood is an intentionally small community. Our size is an asset: remaining a small community emphasizes the role each individual fulfills in the success of our oasis of learning. As a small school we more profoundly feel the impact of each gift we receive. Larger communities with thousands of annual donors might not feel the impact of their individual contributions as acutely as we do here at Scattergood. A gift that might otherwise be felt as a drop in the ocean in a larger institution, will be felt more strongly and significantly in the pond that is Scattergood.

To join the Hickory Grove, you must first have Scattergood (EIN: 42-0698912) as the recipient of a planned gift, be that through your estate, trust, life insurance policy, or one of the numerous other planned giving vehicles. If you need assistance with this, Ethan is happy to help. Once you have completed that step, all you have to do is complete the Revocable Gift Intent Form and turn it in. Most of the information on the form is optional, based on your comfort level and the knowledge available to you.
