Experiential learning allows students to stretch themselves to do amazing work, discovering new depths of understanding. From mock trials and Model UN-style activities in US History classes to utilizing our expansive outdoor spaces as living laboratories for sciences, students are given opportunities to be active participants in their learning.
Bookending our academic year are Farm Term and May Term. While many Scattergood classes use principles of experiential learning, classes during these two terms go all in. During this time, students explore an essential question through multiple lenses and hands-on inquiry, diving deep into their topics and creating powerful work. These terms culminate in celebratory presentations of learning which provide students an opportunity to showcase their projects, experiences, and skills.
Farm Term
For the first month of each school year, students head to the farm to engage in team-taught, interdisciplinary classes that combine social studies, science, and humanities. During Farm Term, students learn collaboratively and connect with their peers and teachers while exploring the farm at peak beauty and productivity. This term is highly anticipated by staff and students alike and sets the tone for the rest of the year.

During May Term, high school students have the option to participate in an intensive 3-week long adventure or service trip. Middle school students and high school students remaining on campus are fully engaged in unique interdisciplinary classes. This innovative term empowers teachers and students to explore academic topics and passions that are beyond the scope of most traditional schools.
