Progressive Philosophy

At Scattergood, cultivating a sense of connection to each other and to the world around us is essential. All learning takes place in a relationship, so we take the time to build and maintain relationships with each other and with the local ecological community. You may find us in a classroom, on our prairie or farm, at the pond, or interacting with interesting people and places nearby.

Students are connected to their learning community and are seen and valued by teachers and peers. They will learn to think critically, ask and answer meaningful questions, take risks, and learn from their mistakes. Students will take this foundation of competence and confidence forward into lifelong learning, and scatter good wherever they go.

Essential Skills & Habits of Mind

A Scattergood education extends well beyond the core curriculum, providing students with essential skills and habits that build a solid foundation for life-long learning.

Inquiry
&
Research

Students employ their natural curiosity as they ask questions, seek answers, evaluate sources, and make connections between concepts and areas of study.

Collaboration
&
Responsibility

Students learn and lead simultaneously while building skills such as active listening, project and time management, and working together toward shared goals.

Communication
&
Literacy

Students contextualize and interpret information, make meaning, and convey concepts with creativity and clarity to connect with a specific audience.

Problem Solving
&
Design

Students learn to identify and articulate problems, design experiments, develop strategies, and execute plans.

Knowledge of Self
&
Resilience

Students learn through inward reflection and cultivation of a growth mindset. They come to understand themselves more fully, learn to advocate for their needs, and develop their capacity to persevere through challenges.

Ethical Engagement
&
Ecological Understanding

Students come to recognize their connection to others as they approach learning through an ethical lens that appreciates and celebrates diversity in the human and natural world.

Fostering Whole-Student Learning

Teachers and staff facilitate student learning both inside and outside of the classroom. We believe students learn best when they are connected to their teachers, their classmates, and their authentic selves.

Build Community

Teachers, together with students, build an inclusive, engaging, and joyful classroom environment that promotes collaboration and active learning.

Know Our Students

We truly see each student as a whole person and challenge them to learn at the growing edge of their abilities, academically, socially, and emotionally.

Spark Curiosity

Through a wide variety of fascinating course offerings, teachers invite their students to approach learning with curiosity and creativity.

Engage Interests

Teacher-led instruction is balanced with student-led inquiry to provide choice in how students learn and how they demonstrate that learning.

Assign Powerful Work

Students are empowered to do work that is relevant to real world issues that matter to them and when possible, that impact their community.

Learning Differences & Support

Scattergood Friends School will make all reasonable accommodations and modifications for learning differences. It is important that Scattergood knows if it has the resources to support each and every enrolled student, mindful of the school’s mission and of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and so we ask that special needs/accommodations are disclosed at the time of application. It is the parent’s responsibility to act in advance concerning a student’s access needs and/or learning support needs, and to be cooperative concerning professional documentation.
