Scattergood’s educational program incorporates wilderness trips, community service and shared crew program, and experiential learning. Our campus includes a working organic farm, restored prairie, pastures, and pond. These spaces serve as living laboratories for inquiry and project-based learning.

While roles vary, staff are expected to participate fully in the community during the school year. This may include:
- Leading a daily crew which includes campus clean up.
- Joining the community for a family-style lunch daily.
- Attending weekly staff and community meetings.
- Attending annual all-school events.
- Serving as an advisor to students.
Many full-time staff live on campus with their families in private housing units. Availability of and need for on-campus housing will be discussed during the interview process.

Job Title: Biology Teacher & Farm Assistant

Reports to: Farm Manager, Academic Dean
Start Date: July 1, 2025 (or as soon as May 1, if available)
Job Summary
Scattergood Friends School and Farm seeks an engaging biology teacher and dedicated farm assistant/livestock manager. Other core duties may include residential life support, advising and/or teaching physical education. This is a 12-month position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach biology and advanced biology.
- Teach a Farm Term class and a May Term class.
- Manage all aspects of the farm’s livestock program (small cow and sheep herds, feeder pigs, laying hens, and occasional turkeys).
- Assist with other elements of the farm program.
- Plan and deliver instruction, as well as measure and report progress to facilitate student development.
- Communicate frequently with students and school staff in ways that nurture a healthy learning experience for students.
- Model the values of Scattergood Friends School.
Other Duties
- Some combination of advising, dorm sponsoring, or teaching P.E.
- Attends regular meetings, including daily collection, lunch, staff meeting, community meeting, and meeting for worship.
- Serve as a crew leader.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in biology.
- Ability to design and implement courses that motivate and engage students.
- Interest in livestock management, and the work of a small and diverse farm.
- Secondary teaching experience (preferred).
- Livestock management experience (preferred).
- Proficiency with Google Suite.
