Grading & Assessment

Scattergood Friends School operates on a semester system with graduation requirements that balance academic interests and personal passions. Four times a year, students receive a numerical grade (see below) and comprehensive narrative evaluations.

  • Passing 4 Honors: Students demonstrate an effort beyond expectations, ability to synthesize skills and concepts, and create original products leading to outstanding gains in understanding and skills.
  • Passing 4: Students demonstrate exemplary effort, ability to analyze a variety of views/methods/ideas/algorithms leading to substantial gains in understanding and skills.
  • Passing 3: Students demonstrate satisfactory effort and an ability to apply the skills and concepts of the course in various contexts leading to clear gains in understanding/skills
  • Passing 2: Students demonstrate a basic comprehension of the skills and concepts of the course and achieve some gains in understanding/skills but growth is hampered by limited or inconsistent effort.

Graduation Requirements

In addition to the following academic requirements, students must apply for and gain acceptance into a four year accredited college or university.

  • Science: 3 year-long credits, including Biology & Chemistry or Physics
  • Math: 3 year-long credits, including Algebra 1 and 2, and Geometry
  • Social Studies: 3 year-long credits, including World History, US History, and US Government
  • Humanities: 4 year-long credits (or the equivalent), including American and World Literature, Quakerism, and Religious Studies
  • Foreign Language: 3 year-long credits in one language with a third year level of proficiency.
  • Seminar: 2 credits, including a 10-page Junior research paper and a 20-page Senior research paper.
  • Community Service: Students must complete 30 hours of community service per year.
  • ELL: International students are enrolled in one section of ELL as their Foreign Language requirement.
