Since 1945 Scattergood has been attracting international students from a wide range of backgrounds. As one of the few schools in the country to provide financial aid to international students, Scattergood’s goal has been to attract students who fit the school’s mission. This has led to an incredibly diverse and committed international student population. Most recently our international student population has made up 20-30% of our population with students recently hailing from India, Afghanistan, China, Taiwan, Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Burundi and Tanzania. This position represents an excellent opportunity to gain experience with a wide range of international students as they integrate into a strong college preparatory program.

Teaching duties are centered around two sections of the school’s core ELL course which provides students with direct instruction in reading, writing, verbal communication and exploration of cultural norms. As a college preparatory school, the goal of this course is to prepare students to function effectively in high level university courses, perform well on required college admissions assessments and help them to analyze American society and reflect on their thoughts and position in this context. Teaching duties comprise eight hours of direct instructional time with students, four hours of preparation and a minimum of two hours a week of office hours during an evening.

The role of International Students Program Director is aimed at creating a cohesive and compelling experience for our international students. This includes:

    • developing methods for communal exploration of the diverse perspectives within Scattergood
    • helping the international student population find their voices and place in the community
    • planning enriching opportunities for international students to further explore key elements of the Midwest

The Director will be a vital voice in the school’s endeavors to develop new programs and opportunities to attract more international students.

    Highly qualified candidates will have:

    • Formal training and experience teaching ELL/ESL courses
    • Demonstrated dedication to students within a mission-driven college preparatory school setting
    • An appreciation for rural agricultural traditions
    • The ability to assist in navigating a diverse community towards a shared vision

Compensation:  Salary is negotiable. Benefits include health insurance and other benefits, a year-round on-campus residence, and meals while school is in session.

            • planning enriching opportunities for international students to further explore key elements of the Midwest

The Director will be a vital voice in the school’s endeavors to develop new programs and opportunities to attract more international students.

Scattergood Friends School seeks to retain a combined English Language Learner Instructor and Program Director for International Students for the 2017-2018 school year.
