Biography:

Mark came to Scattergood in 1999 after spending 8 post-college years continuing his education by traveling, working in homeless shelters, and learning the hows and whys of organic vegetable production. Much of that time was spent in Philadelphia, where he divided time between being a night supervisor at a shelter for chronically homeless men and worked at a UCC Church, leading urban work camps for visiting youth groups. Mark picked apples in York County, Pennsylvania for eight seasons with others committed to simplicity, peace and social justice and spent time in Oregon, living and working at a Benedictine monastery.  He has also interned on an organic vegetable farm, lived in a Catholic Worker community, thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail and spent one summer doing a meandering solo, self-contained 6000 mile bicycle tour from Mt. Angel, Oregon to Philadelphia, PA.

Mark’s job at Scattergood allows him to nurture his many selves: the teacher, lover of books and films, outdoors explorer, organic farmer and one who appreciates living in community. Mark and his wife Jennie and were married at Scattergood and now raise their daughter Gillie here.
