Biography: 

Jane Purcell arrived on campus in 2010 with her husband Mark and her son Jake (class of 2015).  

Since then she has taught Freshman Seminar and Humanities classes, including The American Presidency and Nature Literature.  Her Iowa Writers' Workshop and Prairie Lights classes take advantage of Scattergood's proximity to Iowa City, home to both the famed Workshop and the well-known Bookshop.  The Prairie Lights class is offered yearly.  Students read new works by authors scheduled to read at the store, and then load up in a school van to attend the readings.  She also counsels students on their college application essays.

Past lives were spent in Illinois, England, New Mexico, California, and North Carolina where she worked as a journalist or taught literature, composition, and history at the high school and college levels.  In 2006, the University of California press published her book on Shakespeare
