Scattergood Friends School has a long tradition of international student enrollment.  Our unique learning community is comprehensive and innovative.  We place strong emphasis on academic development, while also building a close community.  Diversity of culture and background are very important to our community and the learning experience for all Scattergood students.  Because we limit the number of students from any one language group, we are truly internationally diverse.

Students come to Scattergood from all across the globe.  In any given year, between 20 and 30 percent of our students came from the countries of China, Rwanda, Bolivia, Colombia, India, Spain, Ethiopia, Taiwan and Mexico.  International students come to Scattergood to experience American culture, but soon find that they are also learning about many other cultures. The small size of our International Program allows for more individualized attention and practical learning.

Most international students enroll in 9th, 10th, or 11th grades,  depending on their language skill level and the amount of high school credits they transfer to our school.  Some international students may have already completed high school in their home country but decide to come to Scattergood to improve their English skills and improve their eligibility to attend US colleges and universities.  Students must be no older than age 20 on the last day of their final semester at Scattergood.

Scattergood’s ELL (English Language Learners) class is designed to help international students develop their English fluency while they simultaneously participate in regular academic classes.  This class, as well as life in our Crew Program, community activities and daily community life ensure that students are fully immersed in English communication through writing, speaking, listening, and reading.  International students also have further support and instruction with a writing lab teacher in the evenings during Structured Study Hall which students can visit for assistance with writing or reading assignments for any class.

Scattergood offers three levels of admissions to meet student’s needs:

Level 1 – Students who do not want to receive a diploma from Scattergood.
Students are expected to complete homework and fully participate in all classes they attend.  While these students will not receive a diploma from Scattergood, they do earn a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the year.

Level 2:  Students who may take longer than four years to earn a diploma.
Students will begin by taking ELL classes in language, social studies and literature to develop English skills and may require extra outside tutoring.

Level 3: Students who will earn a Scattergood diploma within four years.
Students in this tier are expected to graduate from Scattergood within four years. They will earn a diploma at the end of their senior year and are subject to all of Scattergood's graduation requirements. They will take classes with the other members of their grade as well as an ELL class.

Scattergood Friends School is authorized under Federal law to enroll nonimmigrant students.  Scattergood provides each international student with a Form I-20 from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS database) and must comply with all government regulations regarding the entry of international students into the database. The I-20 is issued only after the student is accepted and has provided documentation that demonstrates their ability to tuition and expenses for the duration of their program.  The I-20 is required for the F-1 visa interview at a US Embassy.  Students who are unable to obtain an F-1 visa to enter the United States will receive a full refund of prepaid tuition.  For more information about federal regulations and procedures for studying in the United States, visit Homeland Security's new website: Study in the States.

International students are required to obtain US health insurance that covers accidents and illness.  Scattergood recommends ISM's International Student Accident and Sickness Insurance.  ISM's insurance provider has an "A+" rating which exceeds government rating requirements and meets the needs of our international students, affording them immediate health care in our region.
