Step 1:   Apply for Admission and Financial Aid

The application process begins by submitting all of the following materials to the Scattergood Friends Admission Office:

  • Completed Online Application
  • Current transcripts (Return the Transcript Release form to applicant's current school, not to the Admissions Office at Scattergood.)
  • Standardized test scores - TOEFL, iTEP or SSAT scores for international students (optional) / any recent standardized test scores for US students
  • Completed Recommendation Forms from 1) Math, 2) English or Social Studies teachers, and 3) an adult friend or guidance counselor (As of April 2015, this step is integrated into the online application)
  • Two English writing samples - brief essays, creative writing assignments, book reports, or other English writing homework
  • A non-refundable application fee of $65. International students $125 USD.  Click here to pay online.
  • Additional assessments or information, as needed, upon request
  • Financial aid application (if needed) - Admission and financial aid processes are kept separate to allow the Admissions Committee to admit students on a needs-blind basis.

Deadlines for Fall 2016:
YES, we still have space available for fall!  Begin your application today!

Deadlines for Fall 2017:

Early Decision: October 31 - The application fee is waived if the application is complete (including the submission of all supporting materials) by this date.  Applicants receive first choice in scheduling their personal campus shadow day and interview.  Accepted applicants from this group are considered in the first round of financial aid funding.

Priority Deadline: March 15 - Applicants from this group receive preferred choice in scheduling a campus shadow day and interview.  Accepted applicants from this group are considered in the second round of financial aid funding.

Rolling Admissions: - We continue to accept applications for admission and financial aid until all spaces are filled, however, we find that our most qualified candidates apply by March 15

Applications for entry at mid-year may be considered for well-prepared students.

Step 2:  Schedule Your Visit and Interview

After all applications materials have been submitted, materials will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee and if the Committee decides to move forward, an interview will be arranged. If an on-campus interview is not possible, other arrangements can be made, but all students are strongly encouraged to visit campus.  For those unable to make it to campus, especially in the case of international students, a Skype or FaceTime interview is possible.

When school is in session, it works best to plan your interview for a full-day visit .  The visit will include a campus tour, class visits, an opportunity to meet with the Head of School and lunch with current students. The prospective student will have a 45 minute interview with the Committee followed by a writing assessment and possible math assessment while parents are interviewed by the Committee.

Overnight visits are possible. Families who wish to stay on campus can call our main office at (319) 643-7600 to reserve guest rooms in Berquist House.

Step 3:   Await the Committee Decision

Following the Interview, the Admissions Committee will review all application materials and decide if additional information is needed before determining if Scattergood is a good match for the applicant.  The formal decision will be sent to students and parents via email.

If the student is invited to enroll, the family will receive a tuition contract which needs to be returned to the school with the enrollment deposit of $500.  The family will also receive electronic enrollment forms (roommate preferences, permission forms, health information, etc.).
